The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways observed National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) on October 31, marking the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal administered the National Unity Pledge to ministry officers, employees, and maritime cadets at his official residence. The pledge affirmed commitment to maintaining India's unity, integrity, and security while spreading this message among fellow citizens.
Sonowal paid floral tribute to Patel, recognizing him as the "Iron Man of India" for unifying more than 560 princely states after independence. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for honoring Patel's legacy through the construction of the Statue of Unity (the world's tallest statue) and the official designation of October 31 as National Unity Day since 2014. The minister interacted with young maritime cadets, emphasizing the importance of youth power (Yuva Shakti) in nation-building and connecting India's development to the ports, shipping lanes, and inland waterways infrastructure. Ministry Secretary Vijay Kumar and other senior officials attended the event, which served to reaffirm India's commitment to unity and integrity while looking toward the goal of Viksit Bharat (developed nation) by 2047.
