National Highway Infrastructure Expansion Report

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has documented significant achievements in India's road infrastructure transformation over the past twelve years. The National Highway network has expanded from approximately 91,287 kilometres in 2014 to over 1,46,572 kilometres in FY 2025-26, representing a 61% increase in connectivity. This expansion has facilitated faster movement of goods and services, improved market access, and strengthened regional economic integration.

Bharatmala Pariyojana Progress

The flagship Bharatmala Pariyojana program, approved in October 2017 with an estimated outlay of ₹5.35 lakh crore, aims to develop 34,800 kilometres of National Highway corridors. As of March 2026, projects covering 26,425 kilometres have been awarded, with 22,590 kilometres already constructed. The program focuses on Economic Corridors, Inter-Corridors & Feeder Routes, National Corridor Efficiency Improvement, Border Roads, Coastal Roads, Port Connectivity Roads, and Expressways.

Construction Pace and Efficiency Gains

Highway construction pace has accelerated dramatically from approximately 11.6 kilometres per day in 2013-14 to nearly 34 kilometres per day in 2025. According to a study by Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, National Highway development has significantly reduced average logistics costs by improving factory accessibility, resulting in lower transportation costs between factories and suppliers/customers.

Major Expressway Projects

Several iconic expressways have been developed, including the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway (1,386 km, ~₹1 lakh crore) with sections inaugurated in February 2023 (246-km Delhi–Dausa–Lalsot stretch, ₹12,000 crore), February 2024 (87-km Vadodara–Bharuch stretch), and June 2026 (36-km Kim–Ena and 27.5-km Gandeva–Ena sections). The Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway (118 km, ₹8,480 crore) was inaugurated in March 2023, reducing travel time from 3 hours to 75 minutes. The Delhi–Meerut Expressway (82 km, ₹8,346 crore) was completed in phases between 2018-2021. The Dwarka Expressway (29 km, ~₹9,000 crore) was inaugurated in phases with Haryana section in March 2024 and Delhi section in August 2025. The Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor (213 km, ₹12,000 crore) inaugurated in April 2026 reduced travel time from 6 hours to 2.5 hours and distance from 235 km to 213 km, featuring a 12 km elevated wildlife corridor and 370-meter tunnel for ecological preservation.
