The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the Kanpur-Kabrai 4/6 Lane Access-Controlled Highway, a 117.7-km greenfield project with an estimated cost of ₹7,145 crore. Implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), the highway forms a vital part of the Bhopal-Kanpur Economic Corridor and is designed to transform logistics and agriculture in Central India's Bundelkhand region.
The project will significantly improve freight mobility by connecting the Kabrai mining belt—North India's leading source of aggregates and construction materials—with major industrial and urban centers including Kanpur and Bhopal. Travel time between Kanpur and Kabrai is expected to reduce from approximately 3.5 hours to 1.5 hours, improving freight turnaround times and strengthening linkages with PM Gati Shakti economic and logistics nodes. This will lower transportation costs, reduce fuel consumption, and improve operational efficiency for freight operators while decongesting existing highways.
For agriculture, the highway will enable faster transportation of agricultural produce to mandis, processing units, and consumption centers, helping preserve the quality of perishable commodities and reduce post-harvest losses. It will also facilitate easier movement of seeds, fertilizers, farm machinery, and other agricultural inputs, enhancing farm productivity and integrating rural producers with regional and national markets.
The project is expected to drive inclusive regional development by attracting investment, generating employment, improving supply chain efficiency, and creating new economic opportunities across both mineral and agricultural value chains. As a critical component of the Bhopal-Kanpur Economic Corridor, it represents a strategic investment in connecting mines to markets and unlocking Bundelkhand's economic potential.
