Union Secretary of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Shri Sudhansh Pant, inaugurated a five-day geriatric care training program at the Education Hub in Kevdi Diu, Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu. The program is organized by the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD) in collaboration with the Office of the Collector, Diu, and aims to train approximately 50 Anganwadi workers and frontline functionaries in basic geriatric care.
The training focuses on creating locally available personnel capable of providing basic care, identifying emerging care requirements, facilitating access to government schemes, and offering emotional and psychosocial support to senior citizens. It specifically addresses the needs of senior citizens in Diu District, particularly those living alone, requiring assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), and those with limited access to family-based care.
Key training areas include understanding the physical, psychological, emotional and social dimensions of ageing, principles of basic geriatric care, assistance with routine activities and ADLs, personal hygiene, nutrition and hydration, medication support, mobility assistance, safe transfer techniques, fall prevention, home safety, basic first aid, communication skills, psychosocial support, dementia awareness, and prevention of neglect, abuse and exploitation.
The program adopts a practical, participatory approach with technical sessions, interactive lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, case studies, group activities, and field-oriented examples. Participants will also be oriented to government schemes, programmes, and support services available for senior citizens to facilitate timely access to relevant benefits.
Joint Secretaries Dr Sandeep R Rathod and Shri Sajeesh Kumar N, Director NISD Shri Gaurav Singh Rajawat, and Collector Diu Shri Rahul Dev Boora attended the inaugural session. Ms. Asha Sharma and Ms. Ritu Dandriyal from NISD's Senior Citizen Division are conducting the program, which is coordinated by the Deputy Director (Training) & Head of Senior Citizen Division, NISD.
