Ministry of Statistics Releases Annual Survey of Industries 2024-25 Results
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has published the results of the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) for the reference period April 2024 to March 2025 (FY2024-25). The survey provides comprehensive data on India's registered manufacturing sector, covering 2.67 lakh establishments that drive the nation's economic expansion.
Key Growth Metrics
The registered manufacturing sector demonstrated remarkable growth across multiple parameters. Industrial output increased by 7.81% year-over-year, while total employment grew by 7.19% and emoluments paid to workforce expanded by 12.08%. The sector reported invested capital (fixed capital + physical working capital) expansion of 11.10%, with fixed capital specifically growing by 10.54% from ₹462,409,035 lakh to ₹511,166,407 lakh. Net income increased by 9.68% and net profit registered growth of 7.73% during the same period.
Establishment and Employment Trends
The total number of establishments increased from 2.60 lakh in ASI 2023-24 to 2.67 lakh in ASI 2024-25, representing growth of 2.64%. Tamil Nadu reported the highest number of establishments (41,221), followed by Gujarat (33,084) and Maharashtra (27,379). Total employment surged from 1.96 crore to 2.10 crore persons engaged, with workers specifically increasing from 1.55 crore to 1.67 crore. Total emoluments paid grew from ₹71,646,903 lakh to ₹80,302,971 lakh.
Gross Value Added Performance
Gross Value Added (GVA) increased from ₹2,458.3 thousand crore to ₹2,694.2 thousand crore, indicating sustained growth of 9.59% in industrial value addition. The top five industries—Basic metal, Motor vehicles, Chemical and Chemical products, Pharmaceutical Products, and Food Products—collectively contributed more than 45% of the total manufacturing GVA of the country during 2024-25.
State-wise Performance Analysis
Maharashtra recorded the highest GVA share at 15.92% (slightly down from 15.95% in previous year), followed by Gujarat at 14.10% (down from 14.20%), Tamil Nadu at 10.90% (up from 10.26%), Karnataka at 7.31% (down from 7.47%), and Uttar Pradesh at 6.64% (down from 6.80%). These five states collectively accounted for more than 54% of total manufacturing GVA and 53.30% of total establishments at the all-India level.
In terms of employment, Tamil Nadu (14.99% share), Maharashtra (13.08%), Gujarat (12.99%), Uttar Pradesh (8.72%), and Haryana (6.44%) emerged as the top five states, together accounting for about 56% of total manufacturing employment. These states also correspondingly accounted for significant portions of total emoluments paid.
Historical Trend Analysis
The survey data shows consistent growth trends from 2020-21 to 2024-25. Factories increased from 250,454 to 266,931, with factories in operation growing from 200,395 to 218,543. Fixed capital expanded from ₹369,438,562 lakh to ₹511,166,407 lakh, while invested capital grew from ₹519,114,310 lakh to ₹755,643,072 lakh. Workers increased from 12.59 million to 16.65 million, and total persons engaged grew from 16.09 million to 21.00 million over the five-year period.
Survey Methodology and Coverage
The ASI 2024-25 covers factories registered under Sections 2m(i) and 2m(ii) of the Factories Act,1948; Bidi and cigar manufacturing establishments registered under the Bidi & Cigar Workers Act,1966; electricity undertakings not registered with CEA; and units with 100+ employees registered in State Business Registers. Data collection was conducted through a dedicated web-portal under the Collection of Statistics Act 2008 during October 2025 to June 2026, using an establishment-based approach rather than enterprise approach.
