MoSPI Workshop on State-Level IIP Base Revision

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is convening a three-day workshop from October 28-30, 2026, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, in collaboration with the Department of Economics and Statistics (DES), Kerala, focused on the base revision of the State-level Index of Industrial Production (IIP). This workshop aims to provide technical guidance to States and Union Territories to promote methodological uniformity and improve the quality and comparability of industrial statistics across India.

The IIP serves as a key indicator of industrial performance, tracking changes in the industrial sector's performance and serving as an important input for estimating overall economic growth. It is widely used by policymakers, economists, businesses, and investors to assess trends in industrial activity and support informed decision-making. MoSPI has already updated the base year of the All-India IIP from 2011-12 to 2022-23, which helps the index reflect current industrial production more accurately.

The revised IIP series incorporates several methodological improvements, including revision of the item basket and weights, updating of the factory panel, expansion of coverage to include activities such as Gas Supply, Water Supply, Sewerage and Waste Management, and provisions for factory substitution. The workshop will familiarize participating States and UTs with these structural and methodological changes and help them finalize the list of items to be tracked and the factories that will report data. It will also provide a platform for discussions and feedback on revisions to the National Industrial Classification-2025 and National Product Classification.

Approximately 60 officials from MoSPI and the DESs of various States and UTs are expected to participate in this workshop, which aims to strengthen the quality, consistency, and comparability of industrial statistics across the country.
