The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment published a success story under the NAMASTE Scheme's Swachhta Udyami Yojana, documenting the transformation of four sanitation workers from Nellore, Andhra Pradesh into mechanized service entrepreneurs. T. Ravi Kumar, P. Sekhar, T. Nikhil and E. Ailaiah transitioned from traditional sanitation work to owning and operating a Mini Jetting Machine for mechanized sewer and septic tank cleaning services.
The total project cost was Rs 35.85 lakh, financed through a bank loan of Rs 21.89 lakh and a capital subsidy of Rs 13.96 lakh provided under the scheme. Following equipment procurement, the Nellore Municipal Corporation engaged the group on a long-term basis with monthly hiring charges of approximately Rs 78,500. After meeting operational expenses, each of the four beneficiaries now earns approximately Rs 37,000 per month, significantly improving their financial stability and household economic conditions.
The intervention, supported during 2021-22, demonstrates how targeted financial assistance through subsidies and bank loans enables sanitation workers to overcome financial barriers to mechanization. The arrangement provides assured work opportunities through municipal contracts while promoting safer and more efficient sanitation operations. The success story illustrates the NAMASTE Scheme's approach to creating sustainable livelihoods by facilitating access to capital, modern equipment, and long-term work engagements for sanitation workers transitioning to entrepreneurship.
