National Health Authority's Digital Healthcare Milestone
The National Health Authority has achieved a significant milestone in digital healthcare delivery with its ABHA-based Scan and Register Service (formerly Scan and Share Service) crossing 25 crore OPD registrations. This service, launched in October 2022 under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, enables patients to complete hospital registration digitally through QR code scanning, making the process faster and more convenient while reducing waiting times at registration counters.
Operational Scale and Coverage
The service is currently operational across 30,800 healthcare facilities spanning 36 States and Union Territories and 756 districts across India. The facility breakdown shows 24,323 public healthcare facilities and 6,481 private healthcare facilities participating in the program. On average, nearly 4 lakh patients use the Scan and Register service every day for OPD registration, demonstrating substantial citizen adoption.
State-wise Performance and Institutional Leadership
Among states and union territories, Bihar leads with over 7.30 crore Scan and Register transactions, followed by Uttar Pradesh (4.09 crore), Andhra Pradesh (3.38 crore), and Jammu & Kashmir (1.39 crore). At the institutional level, AIIMS New Delhi has generated the highest number of registrations with over 54.29 lakh digital OPD registrations, followed by AIIMS Bhopal (29.10 lakh), AIIMS Bhubaneswar (23.93 lakh), AIIMS Patna (19.62 lakh), and AIIMS Raipur (18.63 lakh).
Technical Implementation and Benefits
The service enables patients to scan unique QR codes at healthcare facilities using any ABDM-enabled Personal Health Record application. After providing consent, patients can securely share their ABHA profile with the healthcare facility, enabling instant OPD registration without manual paperwork. The service has been implemented across diverse healthcare settings including AIIMS, Central Government hospitals, State Government medical colleges, district hospitals, sub-district hospitals, community health centers, specialty hospitals, trust hospitals, ESIC hospitals, railway hospitals, and private healthcare facilities.
