The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) is celebrating its 32nd Foundation Day on August 23, 2026, at the Mavalankar Auditorium, Constitution Club of India in New Delhi. The event will be attended by approximately 900 Safai Karamcharis, along with representatives from Central and State/UT governments, Urban Local Bodies, Public Sector Organizations, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders working for the welfare and dignity of Safai Karamcharis.
Union Minister of State of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, along with Ministers of State of Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale and B L Verma, will grace the occasion. The Commission's Vice Chairperson Hardeep Singh Gill, Member Karam Singh Karma, and Secretary Rahul Kashyap will also participate in the program.
The day-long program will focus on the dignity and welfare of Safai Karamcharis, elimination of hazardous manual scavenging and cleaning, promotion of mechanized sanitation, rehabilitation and social security measures, and implementation of welfare initiatives under the current government. A significant announcement includes the release of an "NCSK Missed-Call Facility Number" that will allow stakeholders to register grievances, issues, and representations for time-bound resolution.
The Commission's mandate includes recommending specific programs to eliminate inequalities for Safai Karamcharis, evaluating implementation of rehabilitation schemes, investigating grievances, monitoring working conditions (health, safety, and wages), and making recommendations to Central and State Governments. Under the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, the Commission has expanded jurisdiction to monitor implementation of the Act, inquire into complaints, and advise governments on effective implementation. The Commission regularly reviews problems faced by Safai Karamcharis and the status of compensation payments to legal heirs of sewer death victims, providing recommendations to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment through its Annual Reports.
