The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, published a press release on October 16, 2026, detailing the success of the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) Scheme through the case of Ajay Kumar, a 33-year-old scholar from Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. Ajay is pursuing a PhD with aspirations for academic excellence, career success, and socio-economic improvement. Before receiving assistance, he faced financial constraints and difficulties in meeting educational expenses due to limited family resources. The NFSC Scheme provided him with financial assistance commencing in January 2024, which includes fellowship, House Rent Allowance (HRA), and contingency support, with a total availed amount of Rs 40,700. This support has addressed his financial constraints, enabling him to devote greater attention to research and academic responsibilities. As a result, Ajay reports improvements in academic performance, enhanced ability to focus on research, strengthened confidence, and a better outlook towards future career opportunities. His experience highlights the scheme's role in reducing economic barriers for Scheduled Caste students, supporting their academic journeys and long-term goals such as completing PhDs and building professional careers.
