The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment published a case study highlighting the successful implementation of the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) scheme through the example of Dr Shrikant Dilip Khandare from Solapur, Maharashtra. Dr Khandare, who qualified the CSIR-UGC NET in June 2018, pursued doctoral studies focused on developing sustainable solutions for environmental challenges, particularly plastic waste and pollution.

Financial constraints threatened the continuation of his research due to his family's unstable circumstances, creating uncertainty about completing his PhD program. The NFSC scheme provided critical financial assistance starting October 2019, including fellowship support and House Rent Allowance (HRA), totaling ₹9.90 lakh. This support enabled Dr Khandare to focus on his academic work without financial uncertainty and ultimately complete his PhD.

The case study demonstrates how targeted financial assistance through government schemes can help scholars from disadvantaged backgrounds overcome economic barriers, pursue advanced education, and contribute to research addressing pressing societal concerns. The NFSC scheme continues to represent an important avenue for supporting eligible Scheduled Caste students in pursuing higher education and research objectives.
