The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment published a case study highlighting the impact of the National Fellowship Scheme for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) through the journey of Ajay Kumar Ahirwar, a 37-year-old Scheduled Caste beneficiary. Ahirwar, who comes from a financially constrained family background, is currently working as a Guest Faculty member while pursuing his academic and research aspirations. He faced significant difficulties in managing educational expenses, study materials, fieldwork requirements, research-related costs, and daily living expenses while balancing academic responsibilities with professional commitments.
The NFSC scheme provided crucial financial assistance amounting to ₹31,000 per month, which supported his educational and research-related expenses as well as essential living costs. This fellowship assistance helped reduce the financial pressure associated with higher education and enabled Ahirwar to devote greater attention to his academic responsibilities and research activities. The support also facilitated better balance between his professional commitments and continued academic pursuits.
At present, Ahirwar continues to work as a Guest Faculty member while remaining engaged in academic and research activities. The fellowship has contributed to improved financial stability and supported the continuity of his educational journey. The case study demonstrates how targeted financial assistance through the NFSC scheme helps students from disadvantaged backgrounds pursue research and work toward their professional aspirations, particularly for Scheduled Caste students facing financial constraints in higher education.
The National Fellowship Scheme for Scheduled Caste Students serves as an educational empowerment tool by easing financial constraints, thereby enabling eligible students to pursue higher education and build opportunities for academic and professional advancement. The program specifically aims to reduce financial barriers that prevent students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds from pursuing higher education and research opportunities.
