The Ministry of Law and Justice announced the development of two AI-based tools for the Indian judiciary under the eCourts Mission Mode Project. The Artificial Intelligence Division of NIC and Centre of Excellence for eCourts has developed Legal Research Analysis Assistant (LegRAA) to assist judges in legal research and document analysis. Additionally, the Centre of Excellence for eCourts in Pune has developed Digital Courts 2.1 as an integrated digital case management platform that provides a single-window interface for case-related information and incorporates AI-enabled features including voice-to-text transcription and translation capabilities to assist judges in dictating orders and judgments.
Under Phase-III of the eCourts Project, which is being implemented by the Department of Justice in coordination with the eCommittee of the Supreme Court of India, an amount of ₹53.57 crore has been earmarked specifically for the Future Technological Advancements component to adopt emerging technologies including Artificial Intelligence to enhance judicial efficiency. Both AI tools are currently in the pilot testing phase, and their operational framework for deployment and future use will be determined in accordance with the Rules of Business and policies of the Supreme Court of India and respective High Courts.
