Digital Education Initiatives Under National Education Policy 2020
The Government of India has implemented the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 with a focus on strengthening learner-centric and technology-enabled education. In alignment with this vision, two major digital education platforms have been established to provide flexible learning opportunities nationwide.
NIELIT Digital University Platform
The National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT), under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, launched the NIELIT Digital University (NDU) Platform in October 2025. The platform facilitates access to digital learning opportunities, particularly for learners from rural, remote, and tribal areas. It offers online and blended, skill-based courses in emerging technology areas including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and Industry 4.0.
The NDU Platform has achieved significant reach with learners from more than 750 districts across India, recording over 2.70 lakh registrations. The platform currently offers more than 100 courses across various disciplines. Additionally, the platform provides access to the NIELIT Alumni-cum-Placement Portal, which enables learners to access employment opportunities and mentoring facilities. Since October 2025, more than 35,000 learners and over 190 recruiters have registered on the Alumni Portal.
SWAYAM Plus Platform
Under the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT) Scheme, the Ministry of Education has launched the SWAYAM Plus platform to strengthen industry-academia linkages and enhance learner employability. The platform offers more than 500 employability-focused courses curated from over 80 industry partners across 15 sectors, including information technology, artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing, and advanced manufacturing. The platform has recorded more than 6 lakh learner enrollments for skill augmentation.
Implementation and Oversight
The initiatives are being implemented as part of the government's broader digital education strategy, with the information officially provided by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on August 12, 2026.
