NITI Aayog and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH signed an Implementation Agreement on November 3, 2026, under the Nationally Determined Contribution-Transport Initiative for Asia Phase II (NDC-TIA II). This regional initiative is supported by the German Government's International Climate Initiative (IKI) and includes implementing partners World Resources Institute (WRI) India, International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) India, and Agora Energiewende.

The agreement formalizes collaboration between project partners to accelerate the decarbonization of India's road freight sector, which is identified as an important component of India's transition toward a sustainable, energy-efficient, and low-carbon transport system. The initiative specifically addresses the early stage of electrification of medium- and heavy-duty freight vehicles by focusing on the development of adequate charging infrastructure, innovative financing mechanisms, and an enabling regulatory framework.

This collaboration will contribute to India's broader efforts to achieve its Nationally Determined Contribution targets and long-term climate goals, supporting the country's commitment to sustainable development and climate action.
