The Department of Science and Technology (DST) is implementing the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) with a total outlay of ₹3660 crore over nine years, launched in 2018 to strengthen India's capabilities in emerging cyber-physical technologies including Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Internet of Things, Data Analytics, Robotics, Autonomous Systems, Cybersecurity, and Quantum Technologies.
Under the Mission, 25 Technology Innovation Hubs (TIHs) have been established in premier academic institutions nationwide, undertaking activities across four categories: Technology Development, Human Resource Development and Skill Development, Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Start-up Development, and International Collaborations. During 2025–26, four best-performing TIHs were upgraded as Technology Translation Research Parks (TTRPs) at specific institutions with focused domains: IIT Kanpur (Cybersecurity), IISc Bengaluru (Robotics & AI Systems), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad (Mining Technologies from Exploration to Beneficiation of Minerals), and IIT Indore (Digital Healthcare).
The cumulative outcomes demonstrate significant progress with development of more than 1100 technologies and 1300 technology products, along with incubation of over 1130 start-ups. Notable technologies include the 5G-Advanced ORAN Massive MIMO Radio Unit (32TR RU) developed by IIIT Bengaluru for high-speed connectivity in remote areas, Smart Mining and Edge-AI Monitoring Solutions by IIT (ISM) Dhanbad enabling 50 km drone connectivity for mining operations, and AI-enabled Smart Monitoring and Advisory Solutions for agriculture by IIT Bombay.
The BharatGen initiative represents a strategic effort led by IIT Bombay with a consortium of academic institutions to develop indigenous, multimodal AI foundation models tailored to India's requirements. Key technologies include Param-2 (17-billion-parameter multilingual foundation model supporting all 22 Scheduled Indian languages), Shrutam speech-to-text and Sooktam text-to-speech models supporting 12 Indian languages, and Patram (DocBodh Framework) for conversational multilingual access to complex Indian documents.
The Mission has reorganized activities around priority CPS verticals anchored by Lead TTRPs/TIHs: Healthcare (IIT Indore), Agriculture & Water Technologies (IIT Bombay), Mining (IIT (ISM) Dhanbad), Cybersecurity (IIT Kanpur), and Mobility & Autonomous Systems (IISc Bengaluru). This framework enables focused technology development, pilot deployments, and industry partnerships for adoption in strategic sectors including manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, and smart infrastructure.
The roadmap emphasizes strengthening research, innovation, and technology commercialization through enhanced industry partnerships, translational research promotion, and scaling validated technologies for wider societal adoption. Enhanced funding support has been provided to three additional TIHs at IIT Madras, IIT Hyderabad, and IIT Bombay to strengthen translational research and technology commercialization efforts.
