Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal will undertake an official visit to the United States from 29 September to 5 October 2026. The primary purpose of the visit is participation in the G20 Trade Ministers' Meeting scheduled for 30 September and 1 October 2026 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the invitation of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR).
India's position at the G20 meeting will focus on advocating for a rules-based, open, inclusive, transparent, equitable, and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core. The Indian delegation will ensure adequate policy space for developing countries during these discussions. On the sidelines of the main meeting, Minister Goyal will conduct bilateral meetings with his counterparts from other G20 nations, with particular emphasis on creating expanded opportunities for farmers, fishermen, women entrepreneurs, startups, MSMEs, and other enterprises.
A key bilateral engagement will be with the United States counterpart to advance discussions on a balanced and mutually beneficial India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). The talks will specifically work towards finalizing an interim trade deal in accordance with the Joint Statement issued on 7 February 2026.
During the Milwaukee and Chicago segments of the visit, Minister Goyal will meet with chief executives of leading American companies across multiple sectors including manufacturing, consumer goods, agri-business, retail, and technology. He will participate in roundtables with businesses, startups, and innovative companies, highlighting India's opportunities as a manufacturing and investment destination while inviting American companies to deepen their partnerships with Indian enterprises.
In Chicago, the Minister will pay floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on Gandhi Jayanti and Swami Vivekananda, and will interact with professional associations representing the Indian community. The overall visit is expected to strengthen trade and investment partnerships between India and the United States while deepening India's engagement with G20 partners.
