Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the anniversary of the 1975 Emergency, describing it as one of the darkest chapters in India's history and a direct assault on the Constitution. He paid homage to all citizens who defended democratic values during this period when civil liberties were suspended, freedom of expression was curbed, and political leaders, journalists, and social workers were arrested.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to constitutional values, stating that the Constitution embodies the aspirations, rights and duties of 140 crore Indians. He emphasized that guided by the spirit of the Constitution, India will continue to strengthen its democratic foundations and remain committed to the ideals of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.
Modi shared a Sanskrit verse (Subhashitam) that translates to emphasizing the importance of freedom for attaining happiness, achieving higher goals, reaching satisfaction, and attaining the supreme state. The commemoration was marked with the hashtag #SamvidhanHatyaDiwas (Constitution Murder Day) on social media platforms, where the Prime Minister posted detailed tributes to those who resisted the Emergency period.
