Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multiple development projects worth over ₹17,900 crore in Bhogapuram, Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh. The projects span aviation, clean energy, semiconductors, and connectivity infrastructure aimed at accelerating the state's development.
The centerpiece is the inauguration of the Alluri Sitarama Raju Airport, named after the freedom fighter, which the PM described as "a runway for the growth of Andhra and North Andhra" and "a launchpad for a brighter future for the youth of Andhra." This is part of a broader aviation sector transformation that has seen operational airports increase from 74 in 2014 to 166 currently, with the UDAN scheme receiving ₹29,000 crore investment in its second phase.
In the semiconductor sector, the foundation stone was laid for a new semiconductor plant in Visakhapatnam, representing a strategic focus on futuristic technology industries to harness local talent. The government envisions the state evolving into a manufacturing hub alongside its software capabilities, creating new employment opportunities in tech industries.
For port infrastructure, the government aims to develop the entire coastal region as a Coastal Economic Corridor through modernization of existing ports from Visakhapatnam to Krishnapatnam and construction of new ports at Mulapeta and Ramayapatnam. This supports the national strategy to bolster the blue economy.
Connectivity projects include massive railway infrastructure worth approximately ₹1 lakh crore currently underway, featuring complete network electrification and modernization of over 70 stations. Major highway projects like the Visakhapatnam-Raipur Expressway are being implemented to improve regional connectivity, all integrated under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan to optimize logistics and improve ease of doing business.
In the energy sector, the Rayalaseema region has attracted clean energy investments exceeding ₹5 lakh crore. The government is also supporting development of a massive Pharma Park in Nakkapalli, positioning Andhra Pradesh to become one of the country's largest pharmaceutical hubs.
The ultimate goal is to develop the Visakhapatnam Economic Region (VER) into the most prominent economic hub in Asia, with these projects serving as foundational pillars for both Swarna Andhra and Viksit Bharat visions. The government emphasized that these investments will create employment, boost manufacturing, enhance exports, and ultimately improve household incomes and living standards.
