Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multiple development projects worth over ₹18,800 crore in Surat, Gujarat, focusing on transformative initiatives in road, power, and industrial sectors. The projects are designed to drive economic growth and improve 'Ease of Living' for citizens while adhering to the principle of 'progress in harmony with nature'.

Project Details and Infrastructure Development

The development package includes significant infrastructure components such as the newly inaugurated section of the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway, which serves as a vital catalyst for industrial and trade growth. The government is also bringing four-lane highways to tribal belts of Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Bharuch, and Tapi through the Dahod-Bodeli-Vapi corridor, reducing travel time and freight costs while improving access to education, healthcare, and tourism destinations like the Statue of Unity and Saputara. A modern ESIC hospital was inaugurated in Surat to provide better healthcare for workers and migrant families from other states.

Energy and Green Initiatives

Gujarat produces 50GW of India's total 250GW renewable energy capacity, representing one-fifth of the nation's renewable energy output. The state is positioned to lead in emerging sectors like Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia. The Hazira Industrial Area is developing into a comprehensive ecosystem encompassing energy, steel, defense production, and global maritime trade, with upcoming green steel production powered entirely by renewable energy. Surat exemplifies the national waste-to-wealth movement through its innovative 'Circular Water Economy' that treats wastewater for industrial use, contributing to city sanitation and keeping urban areas green and clean.

Economic Context and Self-Reliance

The Prime Minister emphasized that the energy capabilities built over the last twelve years, including historic investments in solar power, ethanol blending, railway electrification, nuclear energy, modernized electricity transmission networks, and expansion of gas pipelines and port storage capacities, have become critically important during the current global crisis. He positioned the Maritime-Industrial Hub as a living testament to the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) initiative, highlighting how modern connectivity projects like the Dedicated Freight Corridor and Bullet Train are driving industrial self-reliance.

Environmental Alignment

The event coincided with Environment Day, with the Prime Minister noting Surat's transformation from a city once affected by plague to being recognized today for its cleanliness. Gujarat established India's first Climate Change Department in 2009 alongside the historic Charanka Solar Park, demonstrating the state's pioneering role in the global transition toward a green future. The development initiatives aim to ensure future drinking water and drainage security, including the approved Tapi Barrage Project, while anticipating Surat's expansion into electric mobility and growing metro network.
