Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day visit to West Bengal on June 20-21, 2026, focused on significant developmental initiatives across agriculture, infrastructure, and defence sectors. The centerpiece was the release of the 23rd instalment of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) worth ₹18,880 crore, benefiting over 9.44 crore farmers across India. For West Bengal specifically, ₹900 crore was disbursed to more than 45 lakh beneficiaries, bringing the state's cumulative disbursement under the scheme to over ₹15,000 crore since its inception in 2019, with nationwide disbursements totaling ₹4.46 lakh crore.
Four major central agricultural schemes were launched in West Bengal. The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) aims to provide insurance coverage to nearly 50 lakh farmers across approximately 14 lakh hectares of agricultural land in 2026-27, with an estimated insured value of around ₹28,140 crore. Agri Stack was launched as part of the Digital Agriculture Mission, creating a unified digital platform for verified agriculture-related services including fertilizer distribution, Kisan Credit Cards, Direct Benefit Transfers, and MSP procurement. The National Mission on Natural Farming will establish 346 natural farming clusters covering 17,300 hectares in 2026-27, along with Bio-Input Resource Centres and mobilization of Krishi Sakhis. The Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PMDDKY) will be implemented in Purulia, Darjeeling, Alipurduar, and Jhargram districts focusing on agricultural productivity improvement, crop diversification, and post-harvest infrastructure.
Infrastructure projects included the inauguration of a modernized fishing harbor at Fraserganj in South 24 Parganas and a new modern fish market at Sainthia, Birbhum. A Regional Semen Production Laboratory and Semen Bank for Goats was inaugurated at Haringhata in Nadia district, the first such facility in Eastern India. Railway projects worth approximately ₹590 crore were dedicated, including the Sankrail-Santragachi Link Line Project in Howrah district for decongesting busy rail corridors, foundation stone laying for a 300-bed New Divisional Railway Hospital at Howrah, and a Road Over Bridge between Haur and Radhamohanpur in Purba Medinipur district. Additionally, 49 road infrastructure projects covering 315 kilometers under PMGSY-III were inaugurated across various West Bengal districts.
On the defence front, the Prime Minister commissioned three indigenously designed and built naval ships - INS Dunagiri (advanced stealth frigate), INS Sanshodhak (survey vessel), and INS Agray (anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft). These ships, designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, feature over 75% indigenous content and involved participation from more than 200 MSMEs, significantly enhancing India's maritime security capabilities and operational readiness.
The International Day of Yoga was celebrated on June 21 with the theme "Yoga for Healthy Ageing," with events organized across nearly 2,500 locations worldwide through 210 Indian Missions and Posts.
