Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 80th Independence Day address from the Red Fort presented a comprehensive economic roadmap titled 'Sapt Dhara' (Seven Streams) aimed at achieving Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047. The vision requires collective action from citizens, governments, industry, farmers, and youth to reform traditional systems and thinking.
Economic Development Pillars
The seven strategic pillars for development include: Manufacturing Power focusing on complete value chain development from components to finished products, emphasizing cost, quality, scale, competitive factories, user-friendly products, attractive packaging, and zero-defect precision manufacturing with 'Quality, Quality, Quality' as the mantra. Agriculture and Food Production targeting global branding of traditional foods, millets, spices, fruits, and flowers through chemical-free farming meeting global parameters. Technology and Innovation covering AI, Quantum, Space, Robotics, and Data Centres, with the goal of Made-in-India 6G reaching every corner and transforming India from market to innovation hub. Gati Shakti emphasizing seamless connectivity through high-speed rail, modern highways, inland waterways, airports, multimodal logistics, and port-led development. Defence Shakti calling for self-reliance and global supplier status through next-generation technologies including drones, counter-drone systems, hypersonic defence technologies, and cyber security capabilities. Green Economy and Blue Economy achieving global scale in green hydrogen, renewable energy, energy storage, green mobility, green manufacturing, and leveraging coastline opportunities in fisheries, coastal tourism, and ocean technology. India's Soft Power promoting Yoga, Ayurveda, holistic healthcare, Heal in India, handicrafts, culture, films, VFX, animation, gaming, digital content, and attracting foreign tourists, global sporting events, and concerts.
Corporate Ambitions and Targets
The Prime Minister set specific corporate targets including 50 Indian companies among Fortune 500 within the coming decade, at least one Indian bank among the world's top five banks, one or two Indian pharmaceutical companies among the world's five biggest pharma companies, and emergence of Indian law firms, rating agencies, consulting firms, accounting firms, and technology companies as global leaders. He emphasized making Indian quality a global identity by meeting global benchmarks in cost, quality, and scale, and urged MSMEs to leverage India's trade agreements to take products to world markets while meeting global quality and competitiveness parameters.
Implementation Framework
The address called for accelerated reforms as a matter of conviction rather than compulsion, requiring coordinated action between Centre, States, and industry with systems, policies, and rules shaped according to 2047 aspirations. It emphasized changing work culture, thinking, and pace of work to accomplish in the coming 5-7 years what hadn't been achieved in previous decades. Additional initiatives include the 100-week Nasha Mukt Bharat campaign against drug abuse involving MY Bharat volunteers, NGOs, socio-cultural organizations, and spiritual leaders; implementation of women's reservation (Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam) providing 33% representation in Lok Sabha and State Assemblies; and youth-led participation in the ongoing national census for accurate policy planning.
