The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy provided an update on the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY) rooftop solar scheme, detailing its affordability measures and implementation progress. The scheme offers higher central financial assistance for the first two kWp of rooftop solar capacity, collateral-free loans from nationalized banks at concessional interest rates of repo-rate plus 50 bps (currently 5.75% per annum) with 10-year tenure, and includes RESCO/Utility-Led Aggregation models.
Financial allocations show substantial government commitment with Budget Estimates of ₹6,250 crore in FY2024-25 (actual expenditure ₹7,822.92 crore), ₹20,000 crore in FY2025-26 (expenditure ₹16,166.23 crore), and ₹22,000 crore allocated for FY2026-27 with ₹10,392.48 crore already expended as of July 22, 2026. Total expenditure across three fiscal years reached ₹34,381.63 crore against total allocations of ₹48,250 crore.
The scheme has achieved significant deployment results with 3,972,447 rooftop solar systems installed covering 4,802,717 households as of July 22, 2026. The program has substantially reduced electricity bills for consumers, with over 18.93 million households reporting zero electricity bills during some months depending on their self-consumption patterns.
