PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana Performance Update
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy reported significant progress under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY), a demand-driven scheme that enables all residential consumers across India, including rural households with grid-connected electricity connections through local DISCOMs, to install rooftop solar (RTS) systems by applying through the National Portal (www.pmsuryaghar.gov.in).
During fiscal year 2025-26, the scheme achieved installation of 18.71 lakh rooftop solar systems with a cumulative installed solar capacity of 6.7 GW, directly benefiting 22.71 lakh households nationwide. Since the scheme's launch in February 2024 through July 22, 2026, cumulative installations reached 39,72,447 RTS systems, benefiting 48,02,717 households across the country including those in rural areas.
The scheme has demonstrated substantial consumer benefits, with electricity bills significantly reduced for participants. DISCOMs reported that over 18.93 lakh beneficiaries, including rural households, received zero electricity bills during certain months or billing periods following RTS installation, depending on their self-consumption patterns.
The PMSG: MBY also encompasses installation of rooftop solar plants in government and commercial buildings, including educational and health institutions. However, these categories do not receive central financial assistance (CFA) as rooftop solar installation remains financially viable for them even without subsidy support.
