The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment highlights the success of the PM-YASASVI Scheme – Top Class Education for OBC, EBC and DNT Students through a case study of Sohan Dudhe, a 19-year-old OBC student from Darwha village in Yavatmal district, Maharashtra. Mr. Dudhe is pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Textile Design at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Bengaluru, with financial assistance from the scheme aimed at reducing barriers to professional higher education for students from rural and financially constrained backgrounds.
The scheme provides targeted financial assistance to enable students from Other Backward Class (OBC), Economically Backward Class (EBC), and Denotified Tribes (DNT) communities to access quality professional education. Sohan Dudhe, among the first learners in his family to pursue professional higher education, received support under the scheme in 2024, which helped reduce financial stress and enabled him to focus on academics, skill development, and practical learning at NIFT Bengaluru.
The case study demonstrates how the scheme helps students develop specialized skills in professional fields like textile design, preparing them for careers in their chosen fields. The program specifically addresses challenges faced by rural students including limited financial resources, lack of guidance regarding professional education, and restricted exposure to educational opportunities.
