PMAY-G Housing Construction Status Update
The Ministry of Rural Development provided a comprehensive update on the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) housing scheme performance as of August 3, 2026. Against the total national target of 4.18 crore houses allocated to States/UTs, the program has achieved 3.91 crore houses sanctioned and 3.12 crore houses completed, leaving 79 lakh sanctioned houses currently under construction.
For FY2025-26 specifically, the ministry reported 32.47 lakh houses sanctioned and 26.57 lakh houses completed, inclusive of sanctions from previous financial years. State-wise performance data shows significant variation, with Maharashtra leading in sanctions (9,40,849 houses) and Chhattisgarh showing the highest completion numbers (5,92,508 houses). Several states including Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, and multiple UTs reported zero sanctions but varying completion numbers from previous allocations.
The scheme operates through beneficiary-driven construction where households build themselves or under supervision, with States/UTs providing localized house design options suitable to climatic conditions and facilitating competitive construction material supply. Quality assurance is maintained through the Rural Mason Training (RMT) Program, while the ministry's PAHAL compendium of rural housing typologies is accessible via AwaasApp.
Significant policy provisions include mandatory reservation of 60% of national targets for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe households subject to beneficiary availability, and up to 5% target reservation for Special Projects addressing disaster rehabilitation for families affected by floods, earthquakes, fires, and other natural hazards as categorized in the National Disaster Management Plan.
The program emphasizes convergence with other government initiatives, providing PMAY-G households with piped drinking water through Jal Jeevan Mission, electricity connections through Power Ministry schemes, and LPG connections under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. Additionally, the Ministry supports Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) households through the PM-JANMAN initiative of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
Financial allocation data reveals that over the last two financial years, Special Projects expenditure reached ₹528.04 crore while Aspirational Districts recorded spending of ₹17,281.58 crore (combined Central and State shares). Under PM-JANMAN, a Central share of ₹2,465.38 crore was released for PVTG beneficiaries during FY2024-25 and FY2025-26, against which total expenditure of ₹6,329.06 crore was incurred including State contributions.
The ministry employs multiple monitoring mechanisms including timely target allocation, adequate fund release, regular progress reviews, dashboard supervision, and state workshops to ensure timely construction across all States/UTs.
