PMAY-G Scheme Progress Update as of June 2026
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) has achieved significant milestones in rural housing construction across India. For the financial year 2025-26 up to June 2026, a total of 33.54 lakh new houses have been sanctioned, while 35.54 lakh houses (including sanctions from previous years) have been completed. Specifically in Jharkhand, 1.48 lakh houses were sanctioned and 0.68 lakh houses completed during this period.
Cumulatively since the scheme's inception, the Ministry of Rural Development has allocated a target of 4.18 crore houses to States and Union Territories. Against this allocation, 3.92 crore houses have been sanctioned by states/UTs, 3.11 crore houses have been completed, and 1.06 crore houses remain to be completed against the allocated targets. The state-wise breakdown shows Maharashtra has the highest pending completion at 23.47 lakh houses, followed by West Bengal (12.48 lakh), Madhya Pradesh (14.17 lakh), and Uttar Pradesh (6.34 lakh). Several states including Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Lakshadweep, and Ladakh have minimal pending completions.
Implementation Challenges and Support Mechanisms
State Governments and UT Administrations serve as the primary implementing authorities, and they have reported several reasons for construction delays. These include beneficiary unwillingness, permanent migration of intended beneficiaries, disputed succession cases after beneficiary deaths, delays in allotment of land to landless beneficiaries, delays in updating credit confirmation from State IFMIS systems, and disruptions due to General/Assembly/Panchayat elections coupled with unavailability of building materials.
The financial assistance structure provides ₹1.20 lakh per unit in plain areas and ₹1.30 lakh in North-Eastern States, two Hill States (Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand), and the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The scheme incorporates significant convergence benefits: ₹12,000 for toilet construction through Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin, unskilled wage employment through MGNREGS/VB G-RAM G, piped drinking water through Jal Jeevan Mission, electricity connections through Ministry of Power schemes, LPG connections through Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, and inclusion of women beneficiaries in Self-Help Groups for economic empowerment.
National Convergence Achievements and Future Targets
At the national level, convergence efforts have yielded substantial results: 3.10 crore houses provided with toilets, 2.45 crore with water connections, 3.08 crore with electricity connections, 2.91 crore with LPG connections, and 1.35 crore beneficiary households associated with Self-Help Groups.
The approved duration for Phase-2 of PMAY-G, which aims to complete an additional 2 crore houses, extends until March 2029. To accelerate construction of the pending 1.06 crore houses across all States/UTs including Jharkhand, the Government has implemented multiple measures: timely allocation of targets and release of adequate funds to States/UTs, regular progress reviews, dashboard-based monitoring and supervision, ministry workshops with States/UTs, and Rural Mason Training programs.
The Ministry of Rural Development regularly reviews the progress reported by States/UTs and addresses implementation issues for timely resolution. This information was formally presented by Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Minister of State for Rural Development, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
