Progress of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G)
The Ministry of Rural Development provided a progress update on the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Gramin (PMAY-G) scheme as of August 3, 2026. Against the total target of 4.18 crore houses allocated to States/UTs, the program has achieved significant milestones with 3.91 crore houses sanctioned and 3.12 crore houses completed. The remaining 79 lakh sanctioned houses are currently under construction.
During FY 2025-26, the scheme sanctioned 32.47 lakh houses and completed 26.57 lakh houses, inclusive of sanctions from previous financial years. State-wise performance varied significantly, with Maharashtra leading in sanctions (9,40,849 houses) and completions (4,42,074 houses), followed by Madhya Pradesh (5,59,011 sanctions, 4,90,185 completions) and Bihar (4,73,839 sanctions, 2,63,151 completions). Several states including Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and others showed no new sanctions but reported completions from previous allocations.
The scheme operates through beneficiary-driven construction where households build their own homes or supervise construction, with States/UTs providing locally appropriate house designs and facilitating competitive construction material supply. Quality assurance is maintained through the Rural Mason Training (RMT) Program. The Ministry ensures timely construction through target allocation, fund releases, dashboard monitoring, and regular workshops with States/UTs.
PMAY-G incorporates significant convergence benefits with other government schemes. Households receive piped drinking water through Jal Jeevan Mission, electricity connections through Ministry of Power schemes, and LPG connections under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. The program includes special provisions with 5% of targets reserved for Special Projects addressing natural disaster rehabilitation, and a minimum 60% of national targets earmarked for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe households.
Financial allocations show substantial spending across categories. Over the last two financial years, Special Projects recorded expenditure of ₹528.04 crore while Aspirational Districts saw spending of ₹17,281.58 crore (combined Central and State shares). Under the PM-JANMAN initiative for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups, a Central share of ₹2,465.38 crore was released during FY 2024-25 and FY 2025-26, with total expenditure reaching ₹6,329.06 crore including State contributions. Funds are allocated to States/UTs as single units, with district-level distribution handled by respective State/UT Governments.
