PM Jan Dhan Yojana 12-Year Performance Review

PM Jan Dhan Yojana (PM-JDY), India's national mission for financial inclusion launched in 2014, has achieved significant scale over 12 years of operation. The scheme has expanded from providing bank accounts to "every household" to ensuring "every unbanked adult" has access to banking services, offering basic banking, need-based credit, remittances, insurance, and pension facilities to underserved and low-income groups.

As of 19th August 2026, the program has reached 59.09 crore accounts, representing a 4x growth from the 14.72 crore accounts recorded in 2015. The geographical distribution shows 45.95 crore accounts in rural and semi-urban areas and 13.14 crore accounts in urban and metropolitan areas. Female participation has been substantial, with 32.92 crore female beneficiaries as of the same date.

Deposits under the scheme have surged approximately 20 times, growing from ₹15,670 crore in March 2015 to ₹3,16,514 crore as of 19th August 2026, indicating growing savings habits and trust in formal banking among low-income households. The scheme has issued 41.29 crore RuPay debit cards as of the reporting date, facilitating digital transactions.

Key benefits include accident insurance cover of ₹1 lakh (enhanced to ₹2 lakhs for accounts opened after August 2018) through RuPay debit cards, with premiums paid by the National Payments Corporation of India. Account holders also have access to overdraft facilities up to ₹10,000 after six months of satisfactory account operation, subject to eligibility criteria. The scheme integrates with social security programs including Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, Atal Pension Yojana, and the MUDRA scheme.

Eligibility extends to all Indian citizens without upper age limits, requiring standard KYC documents including Aadhaar card, government ID proof, permanent address proof, and passport-size photograph. Accounts can be opened at bank branches or Business Correspondent outlets, with no minimum balance requirements and interest rates equivalent to regular savings accounts.

The program has received international recognition, including a Guinness World Record in January 2015 for opening 18,096,130 bank accounts in a single week, and has been highlighted by the IMF and World Bank for its contribution to financial inclusion. India's Financial Inclusion Index has risen from 53.9 in 2018 to 67 in 2026, reflecting deeper access to credit, insurance, savings, and digital payments.
