PMKSY Irrigation Scheme Progress Report 2026
The Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY), launched in 2015-16 and implemented by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, has achieved significant irrigation infrastructure development across India. The scheme's major components include the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (AIBP) and Har Khet Ko Pani (HKKP), with HKKP further divided into Command Area Development & Water Management (CAD&WM), Surface Minor Irrigation (SMI), and Repair, Renovation and Restoration (RRR) of Water Bodies.
Irrigation Potential Created
Since April 2016, PMKSY has created substantial irrigation potential: AIBP contributed 30.66 lakh hectares, HKKP-SMI added 4.29 lakh hectares, and HKKP-RRR provided 1.27 lakh hectares. Additionally, 23.42 lakh hectares of command area was developed under HKKP-CAD&WM. In the last three years (2023-24 to 2025-26), progress included 4.09 lakh hectares through AIBP, 0.96 lakh hectares through HKKP-SMI, 0.41 lakh hectares through HKKP-RRR, and 3.76 lakh hectares through HKKP-CAD&WM.
Regional Performance
Telangana specifically gained 204.74 thousand hectares of irrigation potential under AIBP since April 2016, with 15.18 thousand hectares created in the last three years. The state also restored 25.55 thousand hectares under HKKP-RRR, including 9.24 thousand hectares in the last three years. Notably, no projects were implemented in the Dahod Lok Sabha constituency under AIBP and HKKP components.
Financial Allocation
Central assistance under PMKSY since April 2016 totaled ₹21,823.46 crore for AIBP, ₹5,917.82 crore for HKKP-SMI, ₹781.76 crore for HKKP-RRR, and ₹3,386.08 crore for HKKP-CAD&WM.
Additional Components
The Watershed Development Component (WDC) implemented by Department of Land Resources has undertaken 9,434 projects. The Per Drop More Crop (PDMC) Scheme, now under Pradhan Mantri-Rashtriya Krishi Vikash Yojna, has brought 114.60 lakh hectares under micro irrigation since 2015-16. Dahod district specifically benefited with 14,071 hectares under micro irrigation and two watershed projects covering 15,785 hectares.
Special Initiatives and Focus Areas
A Modernization of Command Area Development and Water Management (M-CADWM) pilot scheme covers 77,106 hectares to modernize irrigation infrastructure with pressurized piped systems. Priority was given to drought-prone regions, with 59 projects included during 2015-16, creating 16.65 lakh hectares irrigation potential (0.97 lakh hectares in Bundelkhand region). Special provisions since 2021-22 relaxed selection criteria and enhanced funding ratio to 60:40 (Centre:State) for projects with over 50% command in drought-prone areas. Five additional projects with 2.44 lakh hectares ultimate potential have been included, creating 0.61 lakh hectares so far.
National Project Status
As of May 2026, 125 AIBP projects with pari-passu implementation of CAD&WM have been approved nationwide, with 71 completed. For SMI and RRR components, 8,338 projects have been taken up with 5,414 completed. State-wise data shows Andhra Pradesh (8 AIBP, 235 SMI/RRR), Assam (4 AIBP, 1119 SMI/RRR), Gujarat (2 AIBP, 33 SMI/RRR), Maharashtra (29 AIBP projects), and Telangana (11 AIBP, 575 SMI/RRR) among the major participants. Bharatpur Lok Sabha constituency benefits from two water body restoration projects (Borai Bandh and Khatnawali Bandh) worth ₹3.79 crore.
Impact Assessment
The scheme has positively impacted irrigation efficiency, crop productivity, and water conservation through expanded coverage, last-mile connectivity, micro-irrigation promotion, improved water management, and watershed development activities, enhancing water-use efficiency and sustainable resource management.
