External Sector and Currency
The Reserve Bank of India reported that, as of August 21, 2026, the special USD‑INR forex swap facility attracted a cumulative foreign exchange inflow of USD 72,848 million. The inflows are broken down as follows: FCNR(B) deposits accounted for USD 65,397 million, overseas foreign currency borrowings (OFCBs) contributed USD 4,860 million, and external commercial borrowings (ECBs) added USD 2,591 million.
Regulatory and Policy Measures
The swap facility was introduced on June 8, 2026 to channel foreign currency resources into the Indian market. The scheme remains open for FCNR(B) deposits until August 31, 2026, while the window for ECBs and OFCBs extends to December 31, 2026. The facility is intended to provide liquidity in the foreign exchange market and support external sector financing needs. The release was signed by Chief General Manager Brij Raj.
Overall, the RBI’s swap facility has mobilised substantial foreign currency resources, with FCNR(B) deposits forming the bulk of the inflow, and the scheme’s timelines indicate continued availability for external borrowing channels through the end of 2026.
