Sectoral Deployment of Bank Credit – April 2026

Surveys or reports:

  • Non-food bank credit grew 15.8% year‑on‑year in the fortnight ended 30 April 2026, compared with 9.8% in the same period of the previous year.
  • Credit to agriculture and allied activities increased 13.7% YoY, versus 9.2% in the corresponding fortnight of 2025.
  • Credit to industry rose 15.1% YoY (7.0% in the prior year); growth was strongest in infrastructure, basic metal and metal products, all engineering, petroleum, coal products and nuclear fuels, and chemical products. Construction, textiles and rubber/plastic segments showed marginally subdued growth.
  • Services sector credit expanded 18.6% YoY (10.1% in the prior year), driven by robust growth in non‑banking financial companies (NBFCs), commercial real estate, trade and professional services.
  • Personal loans credit increased 16.0% YoY (11.9% in the prior year); vehicle loans and housing loans sustained robust growth, while credit‑card outstanding growth moderated.

Data were collected from 41 selected scheduled commercial banks, representing about 95% of total non‑food credit by all SCBs. The definition of the last reporting fortnight changed effective 31 December 2025, so YoY growth rates from December 2025 onward are based on end‑of‑month data for the current year and the previous‑year fortnight data.
