The RBI published provisional foreign exchange turnover figures for the week of 7 September to 11 September 2026. The data cover merchant transactions in both FCY/INR and FCY/FCY segments as well as inter‑bank activity in FCY/INR and FCY/FCY markets, including spot, forward, swap and cancellation of forwards. Across the five‑day period, total combined purchases and sales summed to approximately $735 billion USD. Daily totals were: 7 Sep – $82 bn, 8 Sep – $159 bn, 9 Sep – $150 bn, 10 Sep – $194 bn, 11 Sep – $150 bn. The highest inter‑bank activity occurred on 10 September, with inter‑bank spot purchases of $29.9 bn, swaps of $40.9 bn and forward purchases of $2.5 bn, while sales on the same day recorded spot sales of $29.2 bn, swaps of $36.6 bn and forward sales of $1.8 bn.

Capital Markets and Flows

The turnover figures reflect robust liquidity in the foreign exchange market, with both merchant and inter‑bank segments showing substantial volumes. The inter‑bank segment data are based on reports from both counterparties, ensuring bilateral verification of the reported figures.

Overall, the week’s provisional data indicate a high level of foreign exchange market activity, with total turnover nearing three‑quarters of a trillion dollars, underscoring the depth and breadth of India’s FX market.
