External Sector and Currency

The RBI’s total reserves reached ₹6,981,330 crore (US$729,328 million). Foreign currency assets amounted to ₹5,660,390 crore (US$591,333 million). Gold holdings were ₹1,093,327 crore (US$114,218 million), with a fortnightly increase of ₹30,022 crore. Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) stood at ₹180,460 crore (US$18,852 million), up ₹1,615 crore in the fortnight. The Reserve Position in the IMF was ₹47,153 crore (US$4,925 million), rising ₹405 crore over the fortnight.

Policy Rates and Liquidity

The weekly liquidity table shows variable‑rate reverse repo operations and the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) and Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) balances. On 17‑Aug‑26 the reverse repo rate was 195,859 crore, MSF 47 crore, SDF 176,657 crore, resulting in net absorption of –₹372,469 crore. Subsequent days recorded reverse repo levels of 119,383 crore (18‑Aug), 125,825 crore (19‑Aug), 150,045 crore (20‑Aug) and 95,970 crore (21‑Aug). MSF balances fluctuated between 43 crore and 226 crore, while SDF balances rose from 110,597 crore to 162,921 crore. Net liquidity absorption remained negative throughout the week, indicating continued RBI tightening.

Banking and Credit

Scheduled commercial banks reported aggregate deposits of ₹26,931,346 crore as of 15‑Aug‑2026, a fortnightly decline of ₹6,534 crore. Demand deposits fell by ₹129,278 crore, while time deposits rose by ₹122,745 crore. Year‑to‑date deposit growth was 3.9% for FY 2025‑26 and 2.7% for FY 2026‑27, with year‑on‑year growth of 10.0% (2025) and 14.7% (2026). Bank credit stood at ₹22,007,764 crore, down ₹70,639 crore fortnightly, but up 2.0% in FY 2025‑26 and 3.0% in FY 2026‑27, with strong year‑on‑year expansion of 10.2% (2025) and 18.3% (2026). Food credit was ₹114,136 crore, non‑food credit ₹21,893,628 crore. Loans and advances to state governments declined by ₹3,437 crore fortnightly and ₹16,675 crore year‑on‑year.

Money Stock (M3) and Components

M3 expanded to ₹32,294,503 crore on 15‑Aug‑2026, a modest fortnightly rise of 0.1% (₹16,690 crore). Year‑on‑year, M3 grew 14.2% to ₹4,005,795 crore. Currency with the public increased by 0.5% (₹21,670 crore) to ₹4,207,115 crore. Demand deposits with banks fell by ₹129,903 crore (‑3.6%), while time deposits with banks rose by ₹123,899 crore (0.5%). Other deposits with the RBI slipped marginally. Net bank credit to the government rose 0.4% fortnightly to ₹9,400,786 crore, while net credit to the commercial sector fell 0.3% to ₹22,860,557 crore. The data incorporate the impact of a non‑bank‑to‑bank merger effective 14‑July‑2023 and the revised fortnight definition under the Banking Laws (Amendment) Act, 2025.

Overall, the supplement highlights a modest increase in overall reserves and money stock, continued tightening through negative net liquidity absorption, and mixed trends in bank deposits and credit, with notable declines in state‑government advances and demand‑deposit growth.
