External sector and currency
The RBI reports total foreign exchange reserves of ₹7,424,473 crore (US$785,706 million) as of 4 September 2026, marking a weekly increase of ₹357,815 crore (US$44,903 million). Year‑to‑date, reserves have risen by ₹1,261,784 crore (US$87,438 million) since the end of March 2026. Foreign currency assets stand at ₹6,124,821 crore (US$648,168 million), up ₹394,989 crore (US$47,498 million) week‑on‑week and ₹966,446 crore (US$63,692 million) year‑to‑date. Gold holdings are ₹1,075,494 crore (US$113,816 million), decreasing by ₹34,944 crore (US$2,594 million) in the week but increasing by ₹278,548 crore (US$23,517 million) over the year. Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) total ₹177,703 crore (US$18,806 million), down ₹1,725 crore (US$4 million) weekly yet up ₹12,294 crore (US$64 million) annually. The Reserve Position in the IMF is ₹46,455 crore (US$4,916 million), a weekly decline of ₹505 crore (US$2 million) and a yearly rise of ₹4,495 crore (US$166 million).
Banking and credit
Scheduled commercial banks’ aggregate deposits rose 3.5% fortnightly to ₹27,871,530 crore, with a year‑on‑year increase of 17.8% to ₹42,027,14 crore. Demand deposits grew 4.2% fortnightly to ₹3,448,742 crore, while time deposits increased 3.2% fortnightly to ₹24,422,788 crore. Borrowings stood at ₹997,898 crore, up ₹106,035 crore fortnightly. Other demand and time liabilities were ₹1,311,123 crore, rising ₹148,405 crore fortnightly. Total bank credit expanded 1.7% fortnightly to ₹22,387,567 crore, a 19.1% year‑on‑year rise to ₹35,868,881 crore. Food credit reached ₹112,042 crore, up ₹4,170 crore fortnightly, whereas non‑food credit grew to ₹22,275,525 crore, up ₹381,897 crore fortnightly. State government loans and advances fell to ₹27,940 crore on 4 September 2026, a weekly increase of ₹24,824 crore but a year‑on‑year decline of ₹16,130 crore.
Money stock and liquidity
M3 money stock amounted to ₹31,453,126 crore as of 31 March 2026 and rose to ₹33,221,648 crore by 31 August 2026, a fortnightly increase of ₹927,145 crore (2.9%). Year‑to‑date, M3 grew by ₹4,745,730 crore (16.7%) to reach ₹4,745,730 crore in 2026. The components show currency with the public at ₹4,065,488 crore (down ₹13,005 crore fortnightly), demand deposits with banks at ₹3,844,879 crore (up ₹146,620 crore), time deposits with banks at ₹23,410,625 crore (up ₹794,340 crore), and other deposits with the RBI at ₹132,134 crore (down ₹811 crore). Net bank credit to the government was ₹9,369,275 crore, up ₹83,249 crore fortnightly (0.9%). Credit to the commercial sector reached ₹22,226,641 crore, increasing by ₹379,962 crore fortnightly (1.7%).
Liquidity operations
The RBI’s liquidity operations for the week of 31 August to 6 September 2026 show consistent net absorption. Variable‑rate reverse repo operations rose from ₹384,465 crore on 31 August to a peak of ₹602,394 crore on 4 September. The Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) and Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) balances fluctuated, with SDF at ₹287,776 crore on 31 August and decreasing to ₹228,290 crore by 4 September. Net liquidity absorption recorded was ₹671,690 crore on 31 August, ₹648,210 crore on 1 September, ₹727,639 crore on 2 September, ₹788,842 crore on 3 September, and peaked at ₹830,561 crore on 4 September, before easing to ₹264,000 crore on 5 September and ₹245,922 crore on 6 September.
Overall, the bulletin indicates a strengthening of foreign exchange reserves, robust growth in bank deposits and credit, an expanding money supply, and active RBI liquidity management through substantial net absorption during the reporting week.
