RSETIs Empowering Rural Entrepreneurship through Skill Development
The Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETIs) under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) have demonstrated significant impact in promoting self-employment and nurturing micro-enterprises across rural India. These district-level institutes offer free, short-term, practical, residential training to unemployed rural people between eighteen and fifty years of age through a three-way partnership linking the Ministry of Rural Development, State/UT governments, and sponsor banks.
As of March 2026, 632 RSETIs operate across 33 States/UTs, covering 619 districts and supported by 25 sponsor banks nationwide. The program offers 73 courses spanning agriculture, manufacturing, services, and entrepreneurship that align with national skill standards. Since inception in 2009 until February 2026, RSETIs have achieved remarkable results against a training target of 60.81 lakh candidates, with 60.63 lakh candidates trained (99.7% achievement rate). Of these trained candidates, 43.89 lakh have secured sustainable livelihoods, while institutional support has enabled 22.52 lakh beneficiaries to access bank finance for their enterprises.
The program has shown consistent growth, with 2024-25 recording the highest annual training achievement of 6.21 lakh candidates, indicating expanding outreach and improved institutional effectiveness. The sponsor banks play a crucial role in ensuring trainees have access to credit to build viable enterprises, creating an integrated approach where skills translate into real economic activity.

Vishnu Bai from Bhopal transformed from a struggling homemaker to a successful tailor with industrial sewing machines after RSETI training. Umesh Shivaji Ingle transitioned from daily wager to employment generator, starting a noodle unit that now produces 1,000-1,200 kilograms daily with monthly profits of thirty thousand rupees and employing four women from vulnerable backgrounds. Sanjay Malagi from Dharwad leveraged RSETI photography training to establish Cinewinks, a successful videography company that has won nearly ten awards including international recognition and Best Director award at Cochin International Short Film Festival in 2020-21.
These stories illustrate how RSETIs serve as bridges from aspirations to enterprise, creating spaces where rural aspiration takes root and transforms local economies through small enterprises that restore dignity and create self-reliance.
