The Ministry of Jal Shakti reported significant progress under Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase II, with 563,809 out of 586,944 villages (96% coverage) now having liquid waste management arrangements as of August 7, 2026. This centrally sponsored scheme, implemented by States/UTs since April 1, 2020, focuses on ODF sustainability with Solid & Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) and visual cleanliness in villages.
A total of 4,298,194 community greywater management assets have been created nationwide, including 2,550,998 community soak pits/leach pits/magic pits, 1,477,238 drainage facilities, 863,233 termination points, and 269,958 community grey water management systems (including vertical filter, horizontal filter and soil biotechnology).
The program provides financial support of up to ₹280 per capita for villages up to 5,000 population and up to ₹660 per capita for villages above 5,000 population. Funding is allocated based on approved Annual Implementation Plans, past performance, and budget availability, with additional resources coming from Finance Commission grants to Rural Local Bodies, MGNREGS/VB-G RAM G, and convergence with other Central/State schemes, CSR funds, and MPLADS/MLALADS.
State-wise data shows Uttar Pradesh leads in community soak pits (411,424) and drainage facilities (612,329), while Assam has the most community grey water management systems (46,769). Rajasthan reported 275,531 community soak pits, followed by Uttar Pradesh (411,424) and West Bengal (271,525). The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation provides technical manuals, Standard Operating Procedures, and capacity building support to Gram Panchayats for implementation.
