Deposit Composition Shift (March 2022‑March 2026)
Savings‑deposit share declined from 34.6% to 28.7%.
Term‑deposit share increased from 55.2% to 61.6%.
Within term deposits, the ‘₹1 crore and above’ size‑class represented 46.3% of total term deposits, driven mainly by the ‘₹5 crore and above’ class (34.8%); deposits up to ₹5 lakhs accounted for 17.8%.
Maturity and Interest‑Rate Profile
Share of term deposits with original maturity of 1‑3 years rose to 69.8% (from 50.4% in March 2022).
Share of term deposits with maturity up to 1 year fell to 8.8% (from 16.7% in March 2022).
Term deposits bearing an interest rate of less than 7% increased to 61.8% (from 27.3% a year earlier).
Sectoral Contribution to Deposit Accretion (FY 2025‑26)
Public sector banks contributed 50.8% of incremental deposits.
Private sector banks contributed 38.6%.
Regional rural banks’ share of total deposits moderated to 2.9% (down from 3.2% in March 2022).
Ownership‑Sector Share of Total Deposits (End‑March 2026)
Household sector remained the largest depositor at 59.3% of total deposits.
Non‑financial sector share rose to 18.5% from 17.7% in March 2025.
Financial corporations’ share increased to 7.8% from 6.8% in March 2025.
Senior Citizens’ Deposit Share
Senior citizens consistently held about 20% of total deposits, with the share at 20.0% in March 2026 (range 19.8‑20.2% over the last four FYs).

The BSR‑2 data are compiled from branch‑wise reporting of SCBs, including regional rural banks, and are released at disaggregated levels by population group, bank group, state, district and centre.
A new district‑level gender‑wise deposit series is introduced in this release.
The reference date for BSR‑2 is the last day of the quarter; data incorporate the impact of a non‑bank‑to‑bank merger effective 1 July 2023.
The quarterly publication for March 2026 covering all SCBs (excluding RRBs) is also released simultaneously.
