Shri Tadikonda Rambabu's Financial Improvement through Swachhta Udyami Yojana
The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment published a case study highlighting the successful implementation of the Swachhta Udyami Yojana (SUY) under the NAMASTE framework. The scheme provides targeted financial assistance and support for sanitation-related equipment to create income generation opportunities and self-reliance for Safai Karamcharis (sanitation workers).
Shri Tadikonda Rambabu, a 40-year-old Scheduled Caste Safai Karamchari working with Vijayawada Municipal Corporation on an outsourcing basis since 2016, benefited from the scheme. With only Secondary School Certificate education and facing financial constraints, he supported his family on a monthly income of approximately Rs 19,000, which included supporting his homemaker wife and two sons' education—one in Class 10 and another in Intermediate Second Year.
On 21 August 2025, Shri Rambabu along with four other members received assistance under SUY in the form of upfront capital subsidy for procuring a Gulfer 8 KL desludging vehicle. The total project cost was Rs 50 lakh, comprising a loan component of Rs 31.25 lakh and a capital subsidy of Rs 18.75 lakh. This enabled the group to undertake sanitation-related services and establish an additional income source alongside their existing work.
The project has generated approximately Rs 10,000 in additional monthly income for Shri Rambabu, increasing his total monthly earnings from Rs 19,000 to approximately Rs 29,000. This enhanced income has improved his ability to manage household expenses and educational needs while strengthening financial security and reducing day-to-day expense pressures. The scheme has provided sustainable livelihood opportunities through sanitation-related entrepreneurial activities, contributing to socio-economic empowerment and dignity for Safai Karamcharis.
