The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MoSJE), as the nodal ministry for drug demand reduction, has implemented the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) and Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) launched in 2020, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of creating a drug-free India.
A 2019 nationwide survey on substance use revealed that over 7 crore individuals are affected by substance use disorder in India, including nearly 1.2 crore children and 58 lakh women. The ministry has expanded treatment infrastructure to 768 de-addiction and rehabilitation centers across the country, resulting in a remarkable 294% increase in persons seeking treatment—from 2.08 lakh in 2020 to over 8.20 lakh in 2025.
