US President Donald Trump said he made no commitment to China on Taiwan and will decide soon on a $14 billion arms package for the island.
Trump indicated a determination will be made in a “fairly short period” after consulting the person “running Taiwan,” without specifying who.
Both Chinese President Xi Jinping and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that Taiwan remains a sensitive issue and US policy is unchanged.
China has opposed the pending arms deal and warned of possible conflict if the Taiwan issue is mishandled.
