Domestic U.S. industries urged higher tariffs on China and other excess‑capacity exporters during a four‑day USTR Section 301 hearing.
Import‑dependent and agriculture groups argued for a cautious approach, highlighting concerns over higher import duties.
The hearing will feature nearly 150 representatives from companies, trade groups, foreign governments and think tanks through Friday.
The probe targets excess industrial capacity in 16 trading partners, including China, EU, Japan, South Korea, Mexico and Vietnam.
