Budget Review Announcement
Uruguay's Finance Minister Gabriel Oddone announced at a press conference in Montevideo that the government will maintain its fiscal deficit targets in the annual budget review bill, which is slated for submission to Congress by 30 June 2026. The bill will allocate additional resources to programmes addressing child poverty, policing, education and homelessness.
The proposal includes a US$81 million year‑on‑year increase in overall spending for fiscal year 2027, compared with the US$50 million increase that was approved in the five‑year budget presented last year. Of this increment, US$31 million is earmarked specifically for child‑poverty measures recommended by a presidential social security commission.
Funding for the new allocations to policing, education and homeless assistance is expected to come from enhanced tax collection efforts and from cuts to other spending items, according to Oddone. Budget and Planning Office Director Rodrigo Arim explained that the budget will also consolidate and raise child cash transfers under a single programme designed to lower poverty by 25 percent in the identified target groups.
No changes to the overall fiscal deficit target were disclosed.
