Announcement
President Donald Trump announced that the United States and Iran have reached a peace deal that immediately ceases hostilities and authorizes the toll‑free opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the removal of the U.S. naval blockade.
Deal Details
- The agreement is a 14‑part memorandum of understanding.
- It provides for the lifting of U.S. sanctions on Iranian oil exports and the unfreezing of approximately $12 billion of Iranian funds held abroad.
- The Strait of Hormuz will be reopened within 30 days of signing, and Iran will continue to collect fees for safe passage.
- A signing ceremony is scheduled for 19 June 2026 in Switzerland.
- The deal includes a 60‑day period of U.S.–Iran talks on Tehran’s nuclear programme; Iran will agree not to produce or acquire nuclear weapons and will maintain the nuclear status quo until a final agreement is reached.
- Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Gharibabadi confirmed the deal on state television and said it would be signed on the upcoming Friday.
- Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also announced the deal on X, noting the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon.
- Iran’s strategic adviser Mehdi Mohammadi said the deal recognises Iran’s authority over the Strait and that Tehran will keep collecting passage fees.
- Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that nuclear issues will be addressed in a second phase of talks.
Conditions and Contingencies
- Trump warned that the United States will resume attacks on Iran if a nuclear accord is not reached.
- He also called for Israel to halt its offensive against Lebanon, describing recent drone incursions by Hezbollah as “small and meaningless.”
Context
- The conflict, now approaching four months, had disrupted oil production and shipping in the Middle East and contributed to higher global inflation.
- The agreement follows fresh Israeli strikes on Beirut earlier the same day.
