USTR Jamieson Greer announced at a forum that the United States will impose tariffs on its USMCA partners as long as a “giant trade deficit” persists.
He stated President Trump is specifically concerned about the U.S. trade deficit with Mexico and that tariffs on Mexican goods will remain while the deficit is large.
Upcoming USMCA negotiations will focus on changing rules of origin to increase U.S. content; negotiations are occurring bilaterally with Mexico and also with Canada.
Greer indicated that countries in the region will still receive preferential treatment despite the tariff plans.
The United States continues to face trade challenges with Canada; to date only Canada and China have retaliated against President Trump’s earlier tariffs.
