Operation Overview
The United States launched fresh air strikes against Iran on Saturday, targeting forces blamed for a missile and drone attack that killed two American service members in Jordan, according to Bloomberg. U.S. Central Command stated the operation was intended to degrade Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping and to punish Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) units responsible for the Friday attack.
Casualties and Military Toll
Four additional American troops were wounded and one remained missing. The latest fatalities raise the total U.S. military death toll to 16 since the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran began on 28 February.
Diplomatic Developments
In response, Tehran formally abandoned an interim peace agreement reached the previous month. The agreement had established a 60‑day cease‑fire while Washington and Tehran negotiated the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei accused Washington of repeatedly violating the memorandum and warned that the United States would receive “unforgettable lessons.”
Iranian Response and Casualties
Over the past week, retaliatory strikes have expanded beyond strictly military targets to include bridges, utilities, desalination plants and port facilities. Iranian officials reported that 50 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in U.S. attacks since 27 June. Iran also launched attacks against Kuwait, Jordan and Qatar. Kuwaiti officials confirmed damage and a fire at a power‑generation and desalination facility, prompting Kuwait Airways to reschedule most flights.
Regional Travel Advisory
The U.S. State Department advised American citizens to reconsider travel to or through the Middle East, citing the risk of unforeseen escalation and potential flight disruptions.
Energy Market Reaction
Energy markets reflected heightened threat to regional supplies: Brent crude rose about 4.6% on Friday, settling near $88 a barrel, marking its strongest weekly gain since April.
U.S. Policy Actions
Washington resumed its blockade of Iranian ports and withdrew a sanctions waiver that had previously covered Iran’s oil exports. Iran continues to insist that commercial vessels obtain permission before passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, the United States is sending more refuelling aircraft to Israel, potentially expanding its capacity for longer‑range operations.
International Reactions
China and Pakistan called on both sides to halt attacks and resume negotiations.
