Vice President Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan attended the Fisheries Outreach Programme in Agatti, Lakshadweep on August 31, 2026, where he launched "Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031", the Strategic Action Plan for Ornamental Fisheries Development in Lakshadweep. The Vice President described the occasion as a historic day for Lakshadweep and a new milestone in India's Blue Revolution, noting that fisheries development projects worth over ₹62 crore have been approved for Lakshadweep under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
Highlighting the region's maritime potential, the Vice President stated that Lakshadweep has an estimated fisheries potential of over one lakh tonnes, including approximately 94,000 tonnes of tuna and tuna-like species. He emphasized the need to harness this potential scientifically and sustainably while ensuring greater prosperity for island communities.
The Vice President referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision driving India's Blue Revolution, noting that India's fisheries and aquaculture sector has emerged as a major sunrise sector of the economy. He highlighted India's growing seafood exports, which crossed ₹73,000 crore in the last financial year and reached more than 120 countries. Initiatives relating to the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and High Seas would further strengthen India's fisheries sector and global seafood market presence.
Emphasizing sustainability, the Vice President called for responsible fishing, conservation of marine resources, and firm action against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. He urged youth to view fisheries as a modern profession driven by science, technology, innovation and global opportunities rather than merely an inherited occupation. Drawing parallels with the Green and White Revolutions, he stated the Blue Revolution has similar transformative potential for fishing communities and should become a powerful pillar of Viksit Bharat 2047.
