The Ministry of Heavy Industries provided an update on electric vehicle charging infrastructure deployment in West Bengal under various government schemes. Under the FAME-II Scheme, ₹912.50 crore were allocated pan-India for setting up EV public charging stations (EVPCS) without state-wise allocation. As of July 1, 2026, a total of 482 EVPCS have been sanctioned in West Bengal through three Oil Marketing Companies (BPCL, IOCL, and HPCL), with 463 stations currently operational.
District-wise data shows significant variation in deployment across West Bengal. North 24 Parganas has the highest number of sanctioned stations (43) with 40 operational, followed by Paschim Bardhman (42 sanctioned, 42 operational) and Hooghly (33 sanctioned, 33 operational). Kalimpong district has no charging stations sanctioned or operational. Several districts show nearly complete deployment with only minor gaps between sanctioned and operational stations.
Under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme, which has a ₹2,000 crore pan-India allocation including West Bengal, no financial assistance has been provided to West Bengal to date. BHEL, the Project Implementation Agency, has received a proposal from West Bengal that includes 5 EVPCS for South 24 Parganas district (located in Canning, Bakkhali, Diamond Harbour, Kakdwip and Namkhana), but no chargers are proposed for Mathurapur specifically.
The Ministry clarified that setting up of EV charging stations is an unlicensed activity, allowing any institution including private entities to freely setup, operate and maintain EV charging stations across India without regulatory barriers. No assessment has been conducted regarding the requirement of charging stations in Mathurapur specifically.
