AGCOM, Italy’s communications regulator, has asked the European Commission to investigate Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode under the Digital Services Act.
The request follows a complaint by Italian newspaper federation FIEG, saying AI summaries divert traffic and threaten publisher revenue.
AGCOM also raised concerns about the accuracy of AI responses, warning that false information could spread without easy source verification.
The regulator plans to set up a permanent roundtable with Google, other platforms and publishers to discuss copyright, AI and media pluralism.
