Canada’s CRTC announced new rules requiring Netflix and Spotify to allocate 15% of domestic revenues to Canadian content, up from 5%.
Traditional broadcasters must now contribute 25% of revenues, a reduction from the previous 30‑45% range, to support local programming.
The regulations apply to entities with Canadian broadcasting revenues above $25 million, with expected total contributions exceeding $2 billion for Canadian and Indigenous content.
Following the announcement, Netflix shares rose 1.38% and Spotify jumped 13.06%, reflecting market reaction.
